In recent years, Xicheng District has been promoting the river (lake) chief system, strengthening the inspection of rivers and lakes, and timely solving water environment problems. Moreover, ecological restoration projects have been carried out, resulting in good effect. Through water governance, the shoreline is cleared, the water quality is greatly improved, and the ecological environment is better.

12 rivers and lakes in Xicheng District, including the Qianhai Lake, Houhai Lake, Beihai Lake, Xihai Lake, Tongzi River (Xicheng section), the lake in the Grand View Garden, the lake in Taoranting Park, South Moat (Xicheng section), Tonghui River (Xicheng section), the lake behind Beijing Exhibition Center, the lake in Beijing Zoo and Jishuitan West Scenic Spot, are honored with the title of "Beijing’s Beautiful Rivers and Lakes".

With the help of technologies, Xicheng District has further improved the efficiency of handling ecological problems in rivers and lakes. For example, an unmanned boat with 5G wireless technology went for its first test "sailing" in Beihai Park on May, 2020. The bottom of the boat is equipped with a water quality monitor, which can collect water quality data in real time. And the high-definition camera installed on the boat can capture the underwater areas where are inaccessible to human eyes.

Over the years, Xicheng District has completed several river and lake projects, covering the construction of the Xihai Wetland Park, the construction of the trail around the Shichahai Lake, the improvement of the water quality of the North Moat (Xicheng section), the lake in the Grand View Garden and the Rending Lake, as well as the comprehensive water governance of the Liangshui River (Lianhua River). The water quality and the water environment has been improved, and the water ecology has been restored.
