Xicheng District Strengthens Protection and Rejuvenation of Beijing’s Old Downtown Area Based on Regional Characteristics


During the 14th Five-Year Plan period, Xicheng District will focus on the overall spatial structure when protecting Beijing’s old downtown area. The protection covers the old downtown area, historical and cultural blocks and cultural relics three levels.

In the next five years, Xicheng District will comprehensively protect and renovate the Central Axis of Beijing, which is bidding for the World Heritage List, promote the overall improvement of the area along the Chang’an Avenue, build cultural landscape along the Second Ring Road, as well as improve the environment in Xisi Street, Ping’an Avenue and the road from Guang’anmen to Zhushikou.

During the 14th Five-Year Plan period, Xicheng District also plans to promote the protection and renewal of historical and cultural blocks and courtyards, improve the municipal infrastructure in old residential communities and courtyards, strengthen the comprehensive management of parking and increase parking lots, as well as promote the application of new equipment and new technologies, achieve full coverage of 5G networks and accelerate the construction of smart scenarios.

In recent years, Xicheng District has used vacated spaces after the demolition of illegal constructions, marginal land and spaces for greening to build parks and green spaces. In the future, Xicheng District plans to build a tree-lined road system in the core area of the capital composed of tree-lined avenues, tree-lined landscape roads and tree-lined walkways. The district will also build spaces combining Chinese culture with landscape.

During the 14th Five-Year Plan period, Xicheng District will promote the protection, restoration and utilization of cultural relic buildings, which will be open to the public after renovation. Xicheng District will further protect the intangible cultural heritage and raise the level of the intangible cultural heritage team. It will also better inherit and innovate time-honored brands, strengthen the protection of the original site and original appearance of the time-honored brands, promote the construction of the Qianmen-Dashilan cluster of time-honored brands, and upgrade and develop the Liulichang area. Meanwhile, the district plans to restore 20 cultural relic buildings such as the Temple of Yang Jiaoshan and the Jinjiang Guildhall.

In the next five years, Xicheng District will be not only a place with rich historical and cultural atmosphere, but also a livable place.
