The Tianqiao Theatre is among Beijing’s few theatres specializing in staging ballets, operas and symphonies. Many Chinese come to the theatre to enjoy ballets for the first time. Built in 1953, it is the first large-scale theatre built after the founding of the People’s Republic of China. Over the past 50 years, it has staged more than 8,000 performances before 9 million patrons; most of the performances were ballets such as the Sleeping Beauty and the Swan Lake, plays, operas and singing and dancing shows. Top world-class artists, such as Ulanova, Pavarotti and Seiji Ozawa, have given performances in this theatre.
