In 1958, Beijing’s 111 private bookstores engaged in ancient books merged into the Cathay Bookshop. Since then the Cathay Bookshop, located in Liulichang Dajie, has become China’s largest bookstore dealing with ancient books, aiming to purchase and sell classic books and magazines, as well as copies of tablets, sell newly printed classic books, duplicate Chinese classic books and documents, and find missing volumes of complete sets or missing issues of yearly magazines or newspapers.
