After Beiping, today’s Beijing, was librated in early 1949, Beiping was divided into 20 districts. On April 18, 1950, shortly after the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the Chinese Government divided the area of Beijing into 16 districts. On April 8, 1958, with the approval of the State Council, Qianmen District merged with Xuanwu and other districts. And the Central Government combined Xidan District and Xisi District under the name of Xicheng District. On June 28, 2010, with the approval of the State Council, Xicheng District merged with Xuanwu District, bearing the name of Xicheng District, occupying 50.7 square kilometres.
