Xicheng District Allocates 33 Million Yuan in 2021 for Construction of Barrier-Free Environment

This year, Xicheng District will allocate 33 million yuan for the construction of a barrier-free environment, as the participation in the preparation of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympics. There are 32 key projects, 25 key places with 4500 points (nearly 2500 points more than last year), as well as one barrier-free demonstration area and one barrier-free 15-minute convenience service circle in each sub-district of Xicheng District.

"Xicheng District has launched the renovation of barrier-free facilities in streets, government affairs service centers, cultural, entertainment, sports and leisure centers, as well as small-scale businesses (such as small restaurants, small barber shops and small convenience stores) in key areas. We are advancing the renovation of barrier-free facilities in four hotels and six hospitals which will serve the 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympics, as well as the small-scale businesses and patriotic education bases within 1.5 kilometers around. All the renovation projects will be completed by the end of this September," the relevant person in charge of Xicheng District Disabled Persons’ Federation said. Up to now, the first batch of 165 points is about to reach the standard, including 66 government affairs service windows, 14 cultural, sports, leisure and dining places, 25 community life service centers, as well as some parks, public parking lots, public toilets, etc. And the barrier-free facilities will be shown on online maps.

Since the special action for the construction of the barrier-free environment was launched in November 2019, Xicheng District has installed entrance and exit ramps, facilities for people using wheelchairs, barrier-free parking spaces, barrier-free elevators, electronic maps, safety handrails and other barrier-free facilities, and posted barrier-free signs in public service areas, community health service centers, elderly apartments, libraries, and parks. The district also provides barrier-free information service and appointment service. Moreover, some disabled persons have been invited to experience the barrier-free construction and renovation. The upgrade and renovation of barrier-free software and hardware in 15 sub-districts have achieved remarkable results, creating a good barrier-free environment for the approaching Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympics.
