Xicheng District’s Public Cultural Services Enrich Residents’ Life
On December 4, some elderly people sat in a circle in the activity and reading room of Chunshu Library. They were learning how to use the mobile phone to preregister with a doctor online. Xu Rong, 66 years old, was among them. She and her husband are regular visitors to Chunshu Library since it was opened. "My husband and I are members of its reading club, and we also study Chinese culture here. In addition, we take part in themed activities in traditional festivals. On weekends, I like to bring my grandchild here to participate in poetry reading activities."
Chunshu Library is located at No. 9 Luomashi Street, Xicheng District. It’s the former residence of Lin Baishui, a famous journalist (1874-1926). Covering an area of about 365 square meters, the two-yard Siheyuan is a cultural relic site under district protection. There are Lin Baishui Museum, parent-child reading room, activity and reading room, and book reading room in the library, with a total collection of about 15000 books.
In recent years, Xicheng District has been building "15-min cultural service circles" which allow residents can enjoy public cultural facilities within a 15 minute of walking, and has completed the construction of public cultural service network in district, sub-district, and community three levels, according to a relevant person in charge of Xicheng District Bureau of Culture and Tourism. At present, there are 4 district-level cultural centers and libraries, 15 sub-district-level cultural centers, and 259 community-level cultural rooms in Xicheng District. All the public cultural facilities are opened to the public for free. In district-level libraries, the amount of the collection of books reached 2.04 million, with an annual increase of more than 50000 books. Moreover, Xicheng District has three mobile vehicles offering library services, six 24-hour self-service machines for book borrowing and returning, and four 24-hour self-service libraries. There are also 18 sub-district-level libraries with a total area of 8258 square meters and 323000 books, as well as 47 public reading spaces.
