Beihai Park Launches 24 Solar Terms Tickets
From Start of Spring, this year on February 4th, Beihai Park will launch tickets themed on the 24 solar terms. A total of 24 tickets will be sold throughout Major Cold, one color per season. The tickets are only available on the day of the solar term in the South Gate and North Gate of Beihai Park. The number of the tickets on each solar term is only 10000. The 24 solar terms ticket is a combination ticket, for both the entrance gate and the Temple of Eternal Peace (Yong’an) at the southern edge of the White Dagoba Hill. The ticket costs 15 yuan in the off-season from November 1st to March 31st, and 20 yuan in the high season from April 1st to October 31st.
As an imperial garden with a long history of 853 years, Beihai Park embodies the idea of "harmony between man and nature" in Chinese philosophy in gardening, revealing the close connection between Chinese classical garden and the 24 solar terms. The 24 solar terms were formed during the Spring and Autumn Period (771-476 BC) and the Warring States Period (475-221 BC). Based on the movement of the sun, the calendar is a knowledge system and social practice formed by ancient people’s recognizing the seasonal, climate, phenology and other changes in the year. The calendar divides the year into 24 segments to guide farming and social life over the four seasons. In 2016, the "24 solar terms" were added to the UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
The 24 solar terms tickets contain 24 paintings combining the cultural connotations of the 24 solar terms with the famous scenic spots in Beihai Park. For example, the "Pray for Blessing in Spring" painting matches to Start of Spring, the "Spring Rain in Pond" painting matches to Rain Water, the "Nine Dragons Wall" painting matches to Grain in Ear, the "View Lotus in Lotus Pond" painting matches to Summer Solstice, and so on.
In addition, a Spring Festival event is under way in Beihai Park during the Spring Festival to the Lantern Festival. Entrance ticket holders could get a Beihai seal in the park’s cultural innovation shop and receive a Chinese character "Fu (luck)" work or a Beihai Park-themed paper-cut by showing the ticket with the seal during the Spring Festival to the Lantern Festival. On the day of the Lantern Festival, a riddle guessing event will be held in the Temple of Eternal Peace (Yong’an). Visitors who participate in the event could get a Beihai Park-themed paper-cut.
