Former Residence of Mei Lanfang
The former Residence of Mei Lanfang, a renowned Peking Opera star, is a typical compound with houses around a courtyard. It occupies an area of some 1,000 square metres. Originally it was a part of Prince Qing’s Mansion. It houses the Mei Lanfang Museum where about 30,000 pieces of exhibits on Mei’s artistic life are on display. Mei Lanfang was born in 1894 and made his stage debut at 11. His most famous roles were those of female characters and he led among four famous female (dan) role players. He maintained strong continuity while always working on new techniques and created the “Mei School” known worldwide among Peking Opera fans and practitioners.
