Yandai Xiejie is located in the core area of Shichahai and neighbors Di’anmenwai Street to the east, Bell and Drum Tower to the north, Qianhai and Yinding Bridge of Shichahai to the west, Fire God Taoist Temple and Houmen Bridge to the south. It is a convenient channel to the commercial market as well as Shichahai Scenic Area and Tea and Bar Street in Houhai. With the length of 300 meters, it is one of the oldest Hutong in Bejing. In the late Qing Dynasty, there are a lot of stores selling smoking pipes, antiques, and works of calligraphy and paintings, which make the Yandai Xiejie known as the second “Liulichang”. Yandai Xiejie also used to be a snack street in its history.
There are nearly 70 businesses now in this area which mainly sell folk crafts, smoking pipes, and garments and so on. It not only preserves some traditional items, such as Xinyuan Public Bathroom and a special area for selling smoking pipes, but also develops traditional cultural items, such as “Xilian Yuanmeng” handcrafts making and selling and Shichahai Historical and Cultural Museum. Now, modern fashionable elements can be seen in Yandai Xiejie as well. Until now, there are three Taiwan original design galleries settled down here, namely, the Xiang(Enjoy) Sheji(Design), the Haizi Hall and “The One” Gift Shop. Ancient marketplace culture impressed visitors with quaint shops and brands, which makes Yandai Xiejie a busy commercial street.
In November, 10, 2010, Yandai Xiejie was awarded the name of “Chinese Historical and Cultural Street” by the Ministry of Culture and the State Administration of Cultural Heritage.
