Invited by the 17th MEET IN BEIJING Arts Festival, the play To Kill a Mockingbird produced by the drama troupe of the University of Montana, USA, was recently staged in Beijing No.4 High School.
The play tells the story of an unfair trial due to racial injustice during the Great Depression. The story, mainly about three children, is a delicate and profound depiction of racial discrimination and social prejudice in the southern United States at that time. "I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do." This quote from the play expresses the thoughts on prejudice, integrity and courage.
Beijing No.4 High School started to set up drama groups since 10 years ago, which has performed musical The Miserables, and plays Teahouse and Mr. Donkey. This time, the drama troupe of the University of Montana invited 3 students of Beijing No.4 High School to perform in the play To Kill a Mockingbird.
On the same day of the performance, the drama troupe of the University of Montana also gave a drama lesson to students of Beijing No.4 High School. They watched the students’ performance and trained them. It’s learned that students of Beijing No.4 High School will perform play Li Bai by famous playwright Guo Qihong in the near future.
