Xicheng District is blessed with good and plentiful water resources, with a lot of lakes, including the elegant Yongding River, which has witnessed the changes of Beijing since ancient times.
Dotted with 340,000-square-metres of lakes and celebrities' former residences, Shichahai is a traditional cultural centre of the district and a tourist magnet. The moat, an indispensable part of the old capital, is taking on a new look after greening and water treatment efforts. Beihai Park, with a lake area of 390,000 square metres, is a green paradise at the very heart of Beijing. With a water surface of 161,500 square metres and elegant gardens, Taoranting Park is a favourite hunt of locals and foreign residents.
